Bienvenue
Mme Harris et Mme Craig
As your child's educators this year we endeavor to build your child's confidence in all subject areas, but more importantly to feel good about themselves. We recognize every child is unique and special and will grow and develop at their own rate. We will be providing your child with rich experiences that are both relevant and meaningful to your child and align with our Catholic Faith. Through observation we determine what the children's needs are, what interests them and plan play based activities that engage and excite the children.
On a daily basis we are taking observations about where the children are playing, what materials they are using, what they are doing with these materials, how long are they using the materials and making connections to the FDK curriculum. While the children are engaged in play we are asking open ended questions such as "Why did you choose to ___________ with the blocks? How could you do it differently? I wonder what would happen if you?" These questions challenge the children to think a little deeper about their play experiences and really build upon their current knowledge base. At the same time, we are giving them the french vocabulary they need in order to develop their french language skills. We know that taking small groups of children to build different skills is a proven technique to differentiate learning and ensure all children have success.
We believe in a culture of mutual respect in our classroom. Fostering positive relationships between the children and ourselves is really a key piece to building a climate of caring. Learning to self regulate is an important component of the FDK curriculum. Children ages 4-6 are learning to navigate through a multitude of different social situations and are still developing these important skills. Real learning can take place when childrens' differing opinions bump into each other. It provides a perfect opportunity to teach problem solving, self awareness, respect, empathy and pro social behaviours. These social cues and responses to situations (with adult guidance) build children's confidence in managing their own problems. With young children self regulation can take some time to develop and rest assured with daily practice and guidance the skills will develop.
We invite parents to become a partner in their child's experience at school. There will be many opportunities to engage in your child's learning experiences throughout the school year. We will let you know when those opportunities are as the year progresses! Having positive relationships with the parents of the children in our class is very important to us. Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We really do want to help your child to reach their full potential this year and having a strong connection between home and school is important in achieving this goal!
